I have to be honest; I delete every Christmas newsletter that makes it to my inbox.
It’s not that I have anything against the season or against the well-meaning companies who try to wish me well. It’s just that my time is precious and I would rather spend it reading a personal note from a friend, than empty clichéd words from someone who doesn’t know me at all.
If I really think about this, it challenges me to think about how I relate to other people. Do I just send out a whatsapp broadcast or update my facebook status and hope that I will reach a friend or two? Or do I take the time to really connect with someone? Phoning that friend who’s feeling lonely today, praying with that person who’s going through a tough time, visiting that family who’s new in town.
How about you? It really won’t affect me whether you decide to delete this newsletter or to read it. But if you are reading it, can I leave you with the same challenge?
Which will you choose? The “technology-fast-food-mentality” communication methods that we have gotten so used to, or will you make the time and effort to really connect with someone today? Maybe God is even laying someone on your heart right now. Come one, do it. Pick up that phone and make the call.
